Location: Middleton   /  Genre: Chair Making

Artist Statement

Traditional and mid-century styled chairs made from fresh-cut trees split along the grain, using tools and techniques unchanged for 300 years to make strong, elegant forms.

As well as my own designs I make a range of windsor and ladder-back chairs based on historical examples from the US, Wales and the Cotswolds. Commissions undertaken with aplomb.

My timber-framed workshop is high up on the hillside in the village of Middleton-by-Wirksworth. From here I also run courses in very small groups; from stool and bench making over a weekend to a 5-7 day chairmaking experience starting with a straight-grown ash tree and ending the week with an heirloom quality chair made with your own hands. See the website for chances to join me.
