Artist Statement

Vanessa works in both Art and Textiles. Her business 'The Velvet Village' offers a range of art, illustration, homewares and accessories. Her fashion Design background has heavily influenced the way she works with fabrics today, her ethos being to help reduce fashion waste by repurposing vintage materials. Her love of 'vintage' echoes through her artwork, which gives a nostalgic nod to the style and glamour of days gone by, before this fast paced world we know today. As well as Pop Culture, the magic and beauty of nature also influences her work, drawing inspiration from delicate flowers to interesting creatures. Depending on the subject and her mood, Vanessa either impulsively sketches freehand in ink, or hones in on fine details in watercolour or uses loose, bold, carefree brushstrokes in oils. Vanessa is focusing on her fine art oil paintings this year, predominantly portraiture, building a bank of works ready for her Fine Art exhibition at Banks Mill Studios from 31st August.
