Artist Statement
Em Hoten is an artist inspired by the interplay of landscapes, towns, and personal memories, capturing the emotional depth of places and experiences through vibrant colours and layered textures. Her work is rooted in the joy of exploration—walking through autumn leaves, tracing coastal paths, or reflecting on the spirit of bustling towns and quiet corners alike. Each piece evokes a sense of connection, whether to the shifting light over hills, the nostalgia of a cherished moment, or the vibrancy of everyday life.Em works primarily with cold wax and oil, layering and blending to create rich textures and atmospheric depth. This technique allows her to bring movement, emotion, and a tactile quality to her pieces, inviting viewers to engage with both the visual and the physical essence of the work. Her use of colour is central to her practice, with each mark carefully chosen to capture the spirit of the moment—a glowing sunset, a memory of childhood, or the energy of a bustling street.
Storytelling is at the heart of her art. Many of her paintings are tied to personal experiences, such as exploring the Peak District’s rugged beauty or recalling the golden autumns of childhood. Other works are inspired by urban landscapes, where history and modern life converge in striking harmony.
Through her work, she aims to create pieces that resonate deeply with viewers, sparking their own memories and connections. Her practice celebrates the shared emotional landscapes that unite us, whether in the grandeur of nature or the small, fleeting moments that shape our lives.
