Artist Statement
I am intrigued by shapes in the natural world. My work explores boundaries, colour and patterns that I can see within the landscape.I use a variety of colours and have enjoyed experimenting with different palettes. From paint matching the colour that I can see to choosing a colour family, I have loved playing with the materials that I have. I have particularly found that painting with different colours is the most rewarding, and often it allows me to interpret the landscape in a completely different way. What I think I can see within a landscape often evolves as I work.
I have experimented with more abstract forms of three-dimensional work using papier mâché. The work represented the knotting and lesions found within endometriosis – a chronic condition I suffer with. I am not exhibiting that work currently. However, I feel it links with the boundaries I am exploring in my watercolour work. The illness gives me tight limits on what I can achieve and when I can achieve it. This is reflected in the boundaries that I use to segregate the landscape. Almost as if I’m drawing the viewer to concentrate on one area at a time before moving throughout the work, much like I live day to day.
I have drawn upon the varied locations my partner and I have visited since we moved to Glossop. We have been lucky enough to travel throughout the Peak District and into the Lake District too. I photograph places and landscapes that grab my attention and have painted pictures from those images where the shapes in the landscape have caught my eye.
