Artist Statement
All my pots are made to be used. Whether it’s a teapot, a large platter, a sushi plate or a garden planter, for me, a pot is not completely finished until I know it’s being filled with food or plants, being enjoyed at the table or in the garden. My earthenware pots are dipped in a white slip and then decorated with oxides and underglazes using old and new brushes, fingers, grasses, twigs, anything I feel would make interesting marks on the slipped background.
My stoneware pots tend to be more muted in colour and texture, allowing the clay to show through the greens and blues I use to glaze.
My pots are oxidised fired in my electric kiln or in a reduction atmosphere in a large communal wood fuelled kiln.
There will always be variations in my pots. I don’t make perfectly matching sets! There may be fingermarks, glaze drips and other marks from the making. Natural marks left by the potter in the process of translating mud into ceramic.
