Artist Statement
Driven in part by an interest in psychology, my painting is underpinned by themes of human connection / disconnection. Working mainly in oils and acrylics, through my work I try to visually communicate a sense of my relationship with a subject matter - whether that be the landscape, an object, or a memory from my personal history. In this way my work sits somewhere between abstraction and representation, as starting subject matter often becomes abstracted. Simply a vehicle to what I feel or would like to say.Over the last few years I have become interested in visually exploring the way in which the mind can distort memory over time. As a starting point for this area of work, I take inspiration from personal history and allow myself to visually journey through past events or places. In these poorly recalled often distorted psychological landscapes, I look to play with how paint can suggest emotional intensity. With the inward looking way the making of work begins, contrasting with a desire to be connected and communicate with others.
For me, painting is a place of retreat and challenge, contemplation and struggle, beauty and frustration.
